“Tour de SLO” historic bike tour was rescheduled for December 4, 2010 because of rain forecasts.
On Saturday, December 4th, from 10 a.m. to 1p.m., students in Cal Poly’s Ethnic Studies course, Global Origins of U.S. Cultures, will be hosting our city’s very own “Tour de SLO: A path through our multi-ethnic history.” Come learn about San Luis Obispo’s history through a critical ethnic studies perspective. The event is free and open to the public. Cal Poly’s “Tour de SLO” will be experienced on bike, but the public is also invited to sprint, skate, scoot, or walk with us. Come early and we will have donuts, compliments of SLO Donut Co.
The tour will consist of two simultaneous routes that begin at either the Mission Plaza or the Railroad Station (your choice). The tour’s stop points include: Mission San Luis Obispo, Murray Adobe, Chinatown, Sinsheimer building, Japantown, Brook Street, the Railroad District, and the Dallidet Adobe. At each point you will learn about different local communities of San Luis Obispo such as the native Chumash, Spanish missionaries, Chinese, Jewish German, and Japanese immigrant communities, African American settlers, and mixed Mexican-European families. The tour is based off of student research. Please join us in this rare and exceptional learning opportunity presented by Cal Poly students!
The event is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Ethnic Studies Department, The Community Center at Cal Poly, SLO County Bike Coalition, and SLO Donut Co. Research was conducted in large part at The History Center of San Luis Obispo County and Special Collections at Kennedy Library.
