Thornton State Beach
By Robert Pavlik

Thornton State Park Beach Sunbathers and Swimmers

Thornton State Beach sign

Haiku written while working
at Thornton State Beach.

Surfers

Half torsos of men
And harbor seals penetrate
The water’s surface

A cool breeze ruffles
The seagull’s wings; his cries go
Unheard to the skies

White racing clouds move
With cool indifference to
The ocean, the sky

Waves lapping in time,
Incessant roar and whisper:
The universe speaks

Pelicans flying
To the sun, their wings keeping
Time with the weather

Surf Fishermen

Thickly wristed men
In green rubber and striped shirts
On the beach, casting

Darkness dividing
The horizon – it looks like
A storm’s on the way

As the moon bends to
Kiss the horizon, the sun
Peaks over the hill
